The Monkeys on Sixth Street, or, Barred From Raj

A story from Just The Fur Of Us: Tales From the Thousand and One Monkeying Nights

One Thursday the four chimpanzees known as The Monkeys were on Second Avenue, at the corner of Sixth Street. It was about one o'clock in the afternoon. As they stood on the corner, thinking of what it would be fun to do during the rest of the day, a man came up to them, holding flyers in his hand. On each flyer, it said, "Royal Raj Restaurant. Buffet lunch. All you can eat. Large selection of meat and vegetable dishes, appetizers, and condiments. Served every weekday from 12:00 to 3:00. Twenty percent off with this flyer." July grabbed a flyer, and all The Monkeys looked at it. They were very excited. "Hmmmm," they all said. And July said, "I didn't know there were any buffoon lunches on Sixth Street. I thought they were on Lexington Avenue." June said, "Let's go. I'm even hungrier now than I was before." "How much is the buffoon lunch?" inquired May. "Oh, that's easy," answered August. "All we have to do is act like buffoons to get it. That's the price." "Are you sure?" asked May, a little doubtfully. "Of course I'm sure," replied August. "It doesn't say `baboon,' does it?" "No," said May. "Oh, this is exciting." "And we're very good at being buffoons," said July. "Maybe that's why they gave us the flyer." "But what does the twenty-percent-off mean, then?" pursued May. "It means," responded August, "we only have to act like buffoons eighty percent of the time." "Or maybe," said July, "it means we only have to act at eighty-percent of our normal level of buffoonery." "Yes," said May, "this is lunch after all, and we're a little tired." "You must be right," said June.
